…. Joshua Wooden was John’s father and the father to John’s 5 siblings. The same father who lost his farm during the Great Depression. In 1936, when John’s first child was born, Joshua gave his the following poem to live by… the same poem that my departing friend gave to me as his parting gift. And on my first Father’s Day, this poem means just as much to me as it did to Joshua Wooden, his son John, and each of Coach Wooden’s players.
Indiana is known as mecca when it comes to basketball gymnasiums. From holding 13 of the nations 14 largest high school gyms, to Assembly Hall’s fabled 5 banners, to Butler’s Hinkle Fieldhouse being the only gym in the nation that is listed on the National Registry of Historic Landmarks. But truth be told, a small and intimate gym in Knightstown, Indiana might be the most charming gym of them all.
